Fashion Design and Technology FAQ
1) What’s the difference between the BA (Hons) Fashion Design and Technology and the BA (Hons) Fashion Studies courses?
On BA Fashion Design and Technology the emphasis is placed upon technical excellence and design gained through the completion of practical studio based workshops. The course relates unmistakably to the real world of fashion, all of our students carry out a wide range of placements in companies such as Animal, New Look, Top Shop and Look magazine in areas such as design, buying, styling and garment technology.
2) What do you need to see in my portfolio?
Interviews are an opportunity for you to demonstrate your commitment and self motivation, and to discuss aspects of your chosen course. We look for enthusiasm and commitment to fashion. Evidence in a portfolio should include examples of work finished or in progress and should not only be from course/school work but also independent work you have undertaken, for example – sketch books, notebooks, garments, a variety of work in a variety of medias. The work should be presented in a logical, ordered fashion. Large pieces can be shown using photographs.
3) Do we go on any trips?
Yes, we go on trips to London and an International trip every year. We often set a brief around these trips but you are given plenty of opportunity to explore and discover your own sources of inspiration.
4) What are the employment prospects?
Graduating students can enter a wide variety of fashion careers with the confidence that they have an expansive ‘tool kit’ of appropriate skills and knowledge to enable them to progress successfully in their chosen career path. Previous graduates have secured positions with Top Shop, New Look, Alice Temperely, Fat Face and French Connection. Roles include Buyers Admin, Assistant Merchandiser, Pattern Cutter Stylist and Design Assistant.
5) Do you recommend a Foundation Diploma first or can I apply straight after A Level?
Places are offered based on portfolio evidence and the maturity enthusiasm, interest and commitment that the candidates show at interview.
6) Can I go on to further study?
Yes, you may apply to our MA Fashion course which will support advanced artists and designers who wish to develop and refine their practice.
