Alison Shaw – Millinery
Alison Shaw works as a Technician Demonstrator on the BA Hons Costume with Performance Design course at the Arts University College at Bournemouth.
She has a BA Hons degree in Fashion and Textile Design and NCFE accreditation in Millinery. Alison has studied at London College of Fashion and Central St Martin’s completing courses in both couture Fashion Millinery and Theatrical Millinery. She has a passion for hats that encompasses the history, design, construction and wearing of hats and makes hats and headdresses on a freelance basis.
Chris Pegg – iPhone/iPad App Development
Chris is a former student at AUCB, having studied FDA in Interactive Media and then Digital Media Productions in his final year. After leaving University Chris worked at a local digital agency as a iPhone developer and now owns his own company called ‘Wickey Splits iPhone development’. Chris is constantly researching into new apps and technology and is currently working on three of his own apps which will be out in the market next year.
Christine Aziz – Creative Writing
Christine Aziz is a novelist and playwright. Her novel, The Olive Readers won the Richard and Judy novel writing competition out of 46,000 entries. Her articles on human rights, and women in conflict have been published in a number of books. She has worked for many years as a freelance journalist, contributing both news and features to the national media and has reported from around the world. She was the Netherlands correspondent for The Scotsman and The Guardian. Christine was contributing editor and international reporter for Marie Claire and has provided story lines for television cop series, Liverpool 1. Two of her plays, Mary Shelley Goes to Hollywood and Soul Post have been performed in Dorset.
She is a visiting tutor in creative writing at the Arts University College, Bournemouth, and in October this year, organised the Mary Shelley Festival in Bournemouth, for which she wrote and directed its performance events. She was a judge for the Prequel and Sequel to Cannes Short Film Script competition 2010 and runs Beachcombing, a series of regular workshops that use the sea for creative inspiration.
Dr Craig Batty – Writing for Film, TV and Radio
Dr Craig Batty is Principal Lecturer in Screenwriting at Bournemouth University. He has worked on various short film, feature film and television projects, as a writer and script consultant. Craig has written numerous articles about screenwriting and media writing for publications such as ‘Writing in Education,’ ‘ScriptWriter Magazine,’ ‘New Writing’ and the ‘Journal of Screenwriting.’ He is the co-author of two books, ‘Writing for the Screen: Creative and Critical Approaches’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2008) and ‘Media Writing: A Practical Introduction’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2010), and is currently working on a monograph about screenwriting and the protagonist’s physical and emotional journey.
Graham Cottenden – Corsetry
MA, Cert Ed, SEDA: Senior Lecturer at AUCB
An historian, tailor, placement and international exchange tutor. Graham is currently researching 18th to 20th Century tailoring. Current practice has included costumes for the New British Galleries at the Victoria and Albert Museum and international tailoring workshops.
Graham Wood – Modelmaking
Graham is a graduate of AUCB and is currently working as a technician and Visiting Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Modelmaking course. He has previously worked as an architectural and museum modelmaker. Graham has made models for film and television; working on productions such as Postman Pat, Dr Who and The Wolfman.
John Gridley – Web Design: Developing Your Skills
John Gridley currently teaches Web Design as a visiting tutor here at the Arts University College Bournemouth.
Previously working for over 25 years within a corporate publishing house, John’s background crosses over between offline and online media. With qualifications in Photography, Graphic Design, Video editing, Multimedia and a Degree in Graphic Design (Interactive Media), he has experience in print reproduction, brand awareness, and current Internet web technologies. John also runs his own creative design company Weird Bean Design based in Hampshire, offering businesses of all sizes a unique mix of service and strategic thinking.
John is passionate about Digital Design and regularly speaks at local business and networking events on the subject.
Julia Carter – Life Sculpting
Julia has had a varied and diverse career in art and design spanning thirty years. Working as an architect’s assistant in her early career she went on to take a BA (Hons) degree in Modelmaking for Design and Media, specialising in sculpture and mould making.
Combining her background in sculpting with qualifications in architectural ceramics she has, over many years, undertaken various commissions, which have been both private and public projects. Julia has taught classes for sculpting in a six form college and both sculpting and life drawing here at the AUCB as a VT. Currently she works full time in the workshops here at the AUCB, where she facilitates students across all courses, advising them on materials, techniques and in the making of their work.
Linda Bell-Simmonds – Interior Design
Linda was once a student at AUCB and studied on the Spatial Design course, she has always had an interest in the creative industries with art and design being her main passions. Linda has worked on residential and commercial interiors emcompassing leisure centres, offices, shops and houses; she has also been involved with giving old furniture a new lease of life and designing ads for press.
Jon Mackenzie – Photography 3
After graduating from AUCB, Jon went on to freelance as a photographic assistant for a variety of commercial photographers working in the advertising and editorial fields. Having gained valuable experience working in the photographic industry, Jon has been undertaking commissions as a freelance photographer travelling throughout the country over the last few years. Along with this Jon has been teaching for several years at AUCB part time and when he gets the opportunity, likes to indulge in his personal work having an interest in documentary practice.
Nick Meaney – Acting
Nick lived in France, Greece, Spain and Tenerife for a number of years and speaks Spanish and French fluently. After reaching the position of Sales and Marketing Director of Prudential International Property for Tenerife and Southern Spain, he decided to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming an actor. He moved to the USA and won a place at the prestigious acting conservatory The American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Los Angeles. Nick graduated from the AADA and won the Philip Loeb Award for Acting both in 1990 and 1991. Nick continued his studies for the next 5 years with one of Hollywood’s top acting coaches Stan Roth who taught the same techniques ACTA uses to Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire.
In 1991 Nick, Max Foster and Tom Crawford formed a talent management company called Classic Talent Management. CTM continues to run and has been successful in procuring roles for it’s clients in Films, TV and Commercials including Apollo 13, Pirates of the Carribean, Jerry Maguire, Catch Me if You Can, Titanic, Gone in 60 Seconds, Air Force One, Will & Grace, Scrubs, That’s So Raven, CSI, Without A Trace, Malcolm In The Middle, The X-Files, IBM, McDonald’s, Volvo, Fosters Beer, Microsoft.
Nick has worked with numerous stars including Kirstie Alley, Pamela Anderson, Alec Baldwin, Warren Beatty, Annette Benning, Tom Berenger, Nicolas Cage, Dean Cain, Ted Danson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Shannon Doherty, David Duchoveny, Laurence Fishburne, Kelsey Grammar, Teri Hatcher, Angelina Jolie, Diane Keaton, Nick Nolte, Julia Roberts, David Schwimmer, Raven Symone and Kate Winslet.
Pete McKinley – Senior Officer – Short Courses Office

Pete is an ex Royal Navy Photographic Officer with 25 years of accumulated experience in a diverse range photographic disciplines.
On leaving the Royal Navy Pete worked as a freelance photographer before opening his own studio, catering to the advertising, commercial and social sectors.
Having made the move into education several years later Pete has designed developed and delivered many of the Photography Short Courses here at the Arts University including the very popular Photography Summer Courses and the Specialised Bespoke training that Pete offers to local companies and individuals.
Robin Mukherjee – Writing for Film, TV and Radio
Over the last twenty-five years, Robin’s work has stretched from European cinema to mainstream British television. Along the way he has written for radio and theatre and directed for both theatre and television. He has also taught extensively, mainly in universities up to and including PhD level. His feature film, Dance of The Wind, premiered at The Venice Film Festival, was critically acclaimed worldwide and won many awards including the Audience Prize at the London Film Festival.
In addition to numerous television specials, featuring actors such as Brian Cox, John Thaw, Frances Barber, Andy Sirkis and Ioann Gruffudd, he has been a core writer on many highly successful series, helping to create and shape award-winning British dramas. A three-part original serial for CBBC, produced by Lime Pictures is currently in post-production. A feature film adaptation of the novella ‘Lore’ by Rachel Seiffert is in pre-production to be directed by Cate Shortland.
Sophie Monro – Make Up For Film, TV and Theatre
Sophie first completed a BA (Hons) degree in Photographic Art before turning her attentions to make-up and undertaking a VTCT course in Theatrical & Media Make-up. Sophie has experience in theatre, film and photographic make-up work and is enjoying the challenge of working on the FdA Makeup course at AUCB.
Andy Cope – Black and White Photography/ Printing
Andy graduated from the AUCB in 2006 and combines working at the university and maintaining a professional profile within industry taking on freelance commissions.
Andy has been operating as a Freelance Photographer since 1985, working in many disciplines, including social, advertising, and commercial. The current resurgence of Black and White is welcomed by Andy, who has maintained a passion throughout, for both the technical and aesthetic aspects of this medium and takes pleasure in passing on the skills and knowledge he has acquired through many years of professional practice.
Monica Hew – Customised Pattern Cutting
Monica, offers a wealth of hands on experience and knowledge, after leaving The London School of Fashion, she went on to gain eight years of industrial experience working in the West End of London as a production manager in women’s clothing, added to this Monica has also been an instrumental part of a business involved in period costume replications for numerous years.
The past four years has seen Monica work as a visiting Technichian with the AUCB, primarily assisting the final year fashion students
in preperation for major exhibitions such as the annual Earl’s Court Fashion Show.
Jason Bascombe – Photography 1
After graduating from AUCB with a Degree in Commercial Photography, Jason undertook a Masters degree in Photography and the Land at the University of Plymouth. During this time he was able to make a number projects based around the land and it’s surrounding architecture, from subject matter all over the UK.
Jason has also gained experience, over a number of years, working as a freelance photographer and as a photographic assistant in advertising and editorial fields. Jason uses both film and digital photographic capture as well as analogue and digital print output.
Sasha Paul – Auditioning Techniques
Sasha trained at The Birmingham School of Speech Training and Dramatic Art. . Her TELEVISION credits include;- a leading role in several episodes of ‘Peak Practice’, ‘Casualty’, ‘Dangerfield’, ‘Boon’, Alleyn Mysteries’. Her FILM work includes;’A Foot in the Door ‘Lighthouse’ ,’Extracts from my Diary’ and Liars Dice’. She has also worked extensively at The National Film School & Arts University College Bournemouth, including tutoring and lecturing. Her THEATRE credits include:- Shelby in ‘Steel Magnolias’, Viola in ‘Twelfth Night’, Helena in ‘A Midsummer Nights Dream’, Sylv in ‘East’, Julia in ‘Dead Guilty’, Dick in ‘Dick Whittington’, Agnes in ‘Agnes of God’, Emma in ‘Emma’s Story’, Poppy in a UK Tour of ‘Noises Off’. ‘Popcorn’ ‘One Step’ and ‘Of Mice and Men’. Sasha has performed in numerous Radio plays, Corporate work and review shows, such as ‘Newsrevue’ in London and at the Edinburgh Festival. As a writer she has written for both TV and Theatre. Her play ‘Someone Else’s Husband’, is being performed next year, off Broadway in New York. She is trained in British Sign Language. She is currently directing and appearing in ‘A Streetcar named Desire’, at The Lighthouse Theatre, Poole, where her Theatre Company DRAMATIC PRODUCTIONS is based.
Preeti Sood – Creative Printmaking
Preeti was born in Delhi. She did her Bachelors in Printmaking from Chandigarh College of Arts and pursued her Master at Santiniketan, Kala Bhavan in Fine Arts and later did her second MA degree in printmaking at Camberwell College of Art, University of the Arts London.
Upon graduating she taught at the British School in New Delhi, India and practised as an artist in Garhi Studios, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi. She won a scholarship to study in Britain and worked for two years as an Artist Fellow at the University of Lincoln. She has done three solo shows internationally and has been selected as an artist in various printmaking shows in London, Delhi, Bangalore and Japan.
Her research is focused on a practice-based approach located within Fine Art. It revolves around notions of Absence and Presence whereby She explores the concept of ‘GLOCAL’ (Global + Local) within an urban landscape in the context of India where she grew up and Britain where she currently lives. Her practice has evolved into an exploration of this sense of displacement experienced by individuals inhabiting two disparate cultures, through the medium of print.
Demeter Dykes – Screenprinting
Demeter Dykes works as a Visiting Tutor on the Foundation Diploma in Art and Design course at the Arts University College at Bournemouth. Her specialism is printmaking, including intaglio, relief and screenprinting. She has also worked on the BA Hons Fine Art course and the BA Hons Illustration course.
She has a BA Hons degree in Fine Art and a HND in Printmaking. Her own practice involves combing many aspects of printmaking processes with three-dimensional elements, investigating the nature of materials, form, metaphysical notions and poetics. She exhibits regularly and is an active member of Poole Printmakers and The Art Works, Poole.
The screenprinting course introduces students to the use of paper stencils, photostencils and monoprinting directly on the screen. Students are encouraged to explore their interests in imagery, text, mark-making, textures etc. in an open supportive atmosphere.
Martin Coyne – Photography 5 & Introduction to Photoshop
Martin has been a Photoshop devotee for over a decade. An early adopter of the digital medium he fully understands the power and potential offered by the worlds premiere image manipulation software.
He is regularly commissioned photographer and filmmaker whose practice has taken him to Africa and China in the past five years. He has a diverse client base from both the private and public sectors but works mainly in the fields of arts and education. His work has been exhibited internationally including a show at the Centre for Contemporary Arts in Glasgow. He studied on BA Photography course at the AUCB, graduating in 2005.
